Requirements for marl use in embankment construction

Predrag Miščević, Tanja Roje Bonacci

Abstract

Croatian regulations on marl use in embankment construction do not take into account marl's ability to disintegrate with the passage of time. The disintegration of particles in marl embankments causes additional and unexpected settlement of embankment, which eventually causes problems arising from shear strength reduction. The marl disintegration is principally due to the repeated drying and wetting of marl particles. A method for classifying marls with respect to their disintegration susceptibility is proposed, and construction requirements for eliminating disintegration effects are given.
